The Korean wave- Hallyu

Some recurring themes in Korean dramas 1. Historical or period drama ‘The Moon that embraces the Sun’ and ‘The Princess’ Man’ are the best period dramas I have watched till date. ‘Faith’ and ‘Queen Inhyun’s Man’ are historical fiction with a touch of paranormal- magic and time travel, with very well written scripts and unique concepts. “Rooftop Prince” is the story of a crown prince who travels through time by mistake, reaches a parallel world in future and is unable to return back. He tries and adapts to the ways of the new world.  I love hanbok- the so-elaborate clothing; of so many vibrant colors- I totally love it. I can watch a Korean period drama just to see the women characters wearing these lovely dresses, having adorned braids, and travelling in palanquins; and the men wearing the similar long detailed uniform that flows in every direction artistically when they sword-fight, with decorative hats (different variety of hats according to one’s rank, statu...

This is my first attempt at writing anything in just 55 words. Consider this, a piece of fan-fiction- a poem Ethan Wate of “Beautiful Creatures” would have written for the mysterious girl he always dreamt about, had it been a Japanese version. Love Caster Chronicles… I search for a face Which I know, not by name But through the walk and the grace With which she went, as she came. Try I do, to paint my memory of her Through the strokes of my brush- Color of her eyes- the glint and shimmer And finding this face remains my wish.

My favorite blogs: A review

If you are up for some food-for-thought, or feel-good stuff,  Memoirs of Me  is the blog for you. Going by the name of 'privy-trifles', it has the right measures of short stories, inspirational quotes, random just-so thoughts, and basically write-ups on life, as it is... The short stories, written under the title of Metro Diaries, are really good. The author is intelligent. She posts the stories in episode, series format. Once you read the first part, you can't help but search and read the next part and the next part... And I love the titles of her posts--"Inspired Inscribes", "Splurge and Emotions", "55 Fiction", "Flash Fiction", "Wishful Thinking", "Painting Life"...and many more...she does write from the heart...and she is an eternal dreamer.. If you are an avid book reader, love to read books of myriad genres, and want to chose the right book out of a few, you can totally rely on  ALPHA reader - her book ...

Jodha Akbar

Very rarely does it happen that I like a serial. And when it happens, it’s most probably a historical or a mythological one. I have never understood why I am so drawn towards those. Be it Mahabharata, or Ramayana or even Krishna of childhood days; or Prithviraj Chauhan of early teenage days towards sweet sixteen – I have been a devout viewer of their episodes, and an ardent fan too. Now I’m watching ‘Jodha Akbar’, and it too brings the same eagerness back. ‘Jodha Akbar’- the movie. Its story, characters, dialogues and songs are still fresh in my mind; and it still remains one of my favorites. The age old folk lore of this love beyond culture and religion- the love that changed a cruel and ruthless king to a benevolent and kind one, I’m sure, resides close to many of our hearts. Yaadon Ka Idiot Box

Neelesh Misra has become my favorite story teller. He writes so well, and reads it to the listeners so well. Of course I didn’t have a story teller, leave alone a favorite one, for the past 14 years; ever since ‘growing up’ happened, and Grandpa stopped telling me stories. And whenever I insisted, he would tell me that his story basket was empty, and that I had already listened to all his tales, nothing was left. So I read myself stories- champak, chandamama, minabazar, nandankanan, sanskar, gokulam , and many more monthly magazines. Then I promoted myself to reading short story collections by O Henry, Oscar Wilde; Kaleidoscope, and then came Enid Blyton, Nancy Drew, and Heidi; and then full-fledged novels entered my life, which have been with me ever since. ‘Yaad Shehar’- the city of memories. Happy Ganesh Puja

One day, in future, I want to make my own Ganeshji's idol. I want to mould the wet clay with my own hands, shape 'Lambodar's belly, and the trunk; and then paint Him too, myself- with colors and paintbrush and all; and dance to heart's fill to 'ganapati bappa moria' and join in the ecstasy. I think then I would feel the real devotion, and the festive fervor that one ought to feel on this day... And what i really wish is to go to Maharashtra and enjoy Ganesh Chaturthi there, in its true feel, colors, joy and merriment. In Bhubaneswar, we just visit the puja mandaps and pandals in the evening, and have our fill of a variety of laddus. I want to celebrate this day, some year, in its real sense, with more energy and excitement.

  Queeristan (Amazon Link) Thanks to Audible Free Trial I listened to this amazing non-fiction on LGBTQ inclusion in Indian workplaces. Author Parmesh Sahani identifies as gay Indian, working closely with Godrej higher management and employees for years to create an inclusive workplace, both legally and in spirit. This book is a result of those years of experience, research, collaboration with individuals from difference spectrum of the society and organizations who has successfully transitioned into a queer friendly one.   Indian history is inclusive. From the Khajuraho temple architectures, to Konark to the Rig Veda, there is existing proofs even 2000 years ago of Indian inclusiveness of queer. It’s the draconian British law that criminalised it, which was scraped in 2009, came into effect once again following a sad judgement in 2013 and eventually was scraped off for good in 2018. I have always been the one to leave first. Be it luck or circumstance, it has always been this way. Some of the times it has been my decision to venture out of my comfort zone first before all my peers decide to do the same and I am left behind, alone in the old world. The decisions are out of fear of being left alone, most of the times. Or is it self-preservation instead?  I am a person who takes time to adapt, make new friends, get accustomed to new surroundings- an unlikely one to leave first- yet I do. F.R.I.E.N.D.S

I had expected to be bored thinking it to be some over-the-top comedy and quit watching this midway. I had not expected to be sucked into their lives, in upstate Manhattan, and feel their life change over the ten seasons so personally. Ten years in the lives of these characters. And this attachment to that apartment. I had not expected that this sitcom that had been airing globally for ten long years, to not at all be ‘over-hyped’. I wish I had set aside my judgement and for once watched this during my college days. It would have been such a cherished experience. It would have validated all the emotions of those days. Watching the six friends’ personal trajectory from Season 1 to 10, over the ten years, through ten Thanksgivings and Christmases and Hanukah, was such a pleasure. It was towards the end of the book that I realized that this is almost an unfinished manuscript. But still it feels complete in itself. I was constantly wondering throughout why this book is so short. He is an amazing writer and you know that when you hear his thoughts while reading the book - his narrative - his writing style just reveal his love for poetry, literature, philosophy and spirituality. It was striking that he had persistently wondered about death- the meaning of life- its purpose throughout his growing up years, even while choosing a career. Yes, once again. A first for me. I rarely re-watch a movie. Yearning for a light-hearted yet meaningful conversation this was the best choice I had. My hostel mates were out in the city and all the people I called up were busy. Luck by chance. Thanks to the superb uninterrupted internet connection I had a great 1 hour 40 minutes that evening. Movies on Murder Mysteries

It doesn't seem engaging at first. Seems to have a rather slow start. Not moving fast enough. Not thrilling enough. But you sit through the first hour, registering the numerous characters in your head. Each of them seems to have had the reason to commit the murder. Most belong to the same family, that makes it certain that it is indeed an insider's job. You think it through yourself, as the police and detective does in the movie. You are being taken on a ride. But just as you try to decide to quit watching, something is revealed, piquing your interest. Then something else comes up, making you question your own deductions so far. Then you are hooked. Glued to the screen. It is thrilling, the second half. And the end seems satisfactory, explaining all the open ended questions you have had through the watch.
