July : A Month of Massive Changes #MondayMusings

Image
View from the terrace of my hostel (No Filter used in any image in this post) July has been a special month for me. Not just because it is my birthday month, but because many new beginnings, many fresh starts, and many turning points of my life have happened in July. It's mid of the year when I have looked back at what the year was like for the first six months and have anticipated and dreamt about the coming six months. Goals and resolutions are reviewed in July. Forest Research Institute, Dehradun These initial days of college are all about fun, making interactions, creating friendships and increasing your network. It's less on course works and assignments. So we are trying to take full advantage of it. I have made a few friends at the hostel too, most of them are my juniors, with a huge age gap. But the good news is none of us can feel this gap. We visited the Forest Research Institute this weekend. It was a good trip. I stopped at almost every tree to take...

Musings Over Coffee

Image
If we were having coffee I would tell you about all the things I am excited about in the second half of 2018. And, all the things that I am worried about; also the things I experienced in the past six months. Coming back to Bhubaneswar- home sweet home from Hyderabad after long was awesome. There's no place as good as home. Then the first few months went by with exams and preparations. But after March I spent a lot of time just being. Reading, writing, blogging, and visiting friends and family. I really got to do things that I had always hoped and wished for. A vacation. At home . With parents. I read numerous novels and short stories. I caught up with my mother tongue. Read two Oriya novels. I wrote a fair bit for my blog. I actively participated in writing festivals, blogging challenges, and volunteered for writing community online programs. It was so much fun. I won vouchers too. Splurged a few times on novels. I also cooked quite a bit, helped my mother around the ki...

#MondayMusings : Homesick For Another World

Image
Have you ever felt a yearning for something you can’t even define? A keen longing for something you can’t pinpoint even when you are in abundance of everything you want or need.   A dull ache deep in the heart for something beyond your comprehension. A desire you are not aware of. A pain that has not got its due attention. Some grief, not expressed, perhaps. Something. Homesick perhaps, even in the comfort of your own home, amidst the love of your family. Homesick for another world? Being eternally homesick It is a feeling that I have long searched meaning for. I have felt this time and again. Mostly while traveling to new places, leaving back known faces, and saying goodbyes, whenever the canvas of life looms large over me- the miniscule human. What am I but a tiny dot in the vast expanse of universe and time? A strange energy fills me, mostly in moments that I realize would become precious memories of numerous tomorrows. I get goosebumps as the vibe...

Are You Flowing With The Tide? #MondayMusings

Image
We fit ourselves in the new shoe. The feet adjust to contain themselves within its boundary through the pain of shoe   bites in   the first wear. Else, the shoe changes its shape according to our feet. In a new surrounding, is it us who become attuned to the team, the workings of the group, the fraternity. Is it us who adjust our own frequency to match that of the people around us, or is it vice versa? Does the group get accustomed to us? Or is it both ways, each trying to match the others’ thought process, deciding factors, opinions, and views until all eventually fit in the same   mould. Is this the science of belonging? We attune our lives according to the natural frequency of our surroundings. Then we adjust to change. If we protest or fight against change- the workings of our peripheries- it hurts us. We, humans, are similar to the musical instrument that needs tuning depending on who is playing it, for which type of music. Do we make the patt...

Another Week Gone By #MondayMusings

Image
Weeks and weekends seem to pass by in a jiffy these days. Another Monday has arrived. I read a book this week- Six Degrees by blogadda.com. It is a compilation of three different stories with the same set of characters, but a different plot, narrative, and voice. I liked reading it. It was a new, one of a kind of experience. I felt like watching three different movies with the same characters- at the end, it kind of felt surreal. I watched Kapoor & Sons in my laptop. Finally, yes! I loved it. I watched it in three days, part by part. Occasionally, I replayed scenes, paused a lot to savor the moment, took many breaks to dab the tears, and hummed the tunes to myself in the bathroom. I fell in love with the flawed, not so perfect family. I adored the mischievous GrandPa played by Rishi Kapoor- he indeed was the backbone of the family, the one singular person that connected every emotionally estranged member. I empathized with the brothers who loved each other but we...

Queeristan by Parmesh Sahani

Image
Queeristan (Amazon Link) Thanks to Audible Free Trial I listened to this amazing non-fiction on LGBTQ inclusion in Indian workplaces. Author Parmesh Sahani identifies as gay Indian, working closely with Godrej higher management and employees for years to create an inclusive workplace, both legally and in spirit. This book is a result of those years of experience, research, collaboration with individuals from difference spectrum of the society and organizations who has successfully transitioned into a queer friendly one.   Indian history is inclusive. From the Khajuraho temple architectures, to Konark to the Rig Veda, there is existing proofs even 2000 years ago of Indian inclusiveness of queer. It’s the draconian British law that criminalised it, which was scraped in 2009, came into effect once again following a sad judgement in 2013 and eventually was scraped off for good in 2018. I am in awe of the lawyers who fought this legal battle- colleagues and partners – Arundh...
